Village of the reused roof tiles. Idea competition on the revitalization of the beautiful but depopulated village of Albæk. Our proposal was based on the characteristic four-winged farmhouses and suggested roofs with the region’s typical pointed dormers and reused roof tiles as the village’s new identity. We envisioned the village as a hub for reclaimed materials in the old farm buildings, with a roofscape featuring different patterns and combinations of old roof tiles in systematized irregularities. People are willing to pay a fortune for kiln-fired bricks in various tone combinations, so why not work with roof tiles in this way? The idea arose from how we have often observed unintended tonal differences in the renovation of clay tile roofs, as well as the quantity issue that frequently arises when wanting to use reclaimed materials. Often, the desire for reclaimed materials falters because the need doesn’t match the available quantity, but our proposal overcomes this issue by using it as the aesthetic catalyst.
