We have been fascinated by two properties of steel: its ability to bend and its ability, with slender profiles, to enter into statically stable constructions. The development of this coffee table prototype explores these two properties. The profiles themselves are slender and easily bendable, but together they form a stable network of tensile and compressive forces. The geometry in plan is based on simple shapes of a square inscribed in a circle, but three-dimensionally, a series of more complex expressions and configurations arise through the interconnections. The flat steel, initially angular and straight, takes shape through bending and rolling around and downwards, further articulated in its meeting with both the rod steel and the floor on which it rests. The rod steel interweaves legs and frame in a continuous motion. The prototypes have been made with table tops in wood, concrete and glass.
